Project: Hurley Church Roof

In 2024 we discovered that there had been significant degradation of the state of the roof on St. Mary the Virgin church in Hurley. The deterioration is worse on the North side of the church but the whole roof is affected. The advice we have had is that the tiles on the whole roof need replacing and potentially some timber works to be done underneath.

We’ve also had an initial Bat Survey done which has found the presence of both Pipistrelle and Brown Long-Eared Bats. The church is likely home to a maternity roost where these wonderful animals breed. While this impacts how and when we carry out the works, it is wonderful to celebrate the wildlife present even in our church building!

We have a working group who are overseeing the project alongside the architect (who is commissioned by the Parish). They are currently working on actively getting the story into the community, beginning to raise funds, investigating potential grants and philanthropic donors and getting quotes in for the initial stages of the work.

While we welcome any skills which you can offer, we are particularly looking for people who have experience of, a passion for or can help with any of the following:

  • Approaching grant-making authorities and applying for grants

  • Marketing and publicity to help spread the word

  • Supporting the professionals as they monitor the bats

  • Helping to chronicle the story of the church, including these roof works

If you think that you could help with any of those, please get in touch with either the Vicar (vicar@burchettsgreenparish.org) or the Parish Office (office@burchettsgreenparish.org) who will connect you with the working group.

If you don’t want to get involved but want to keep up-to-date with our progress, please check back here or sign up to our newsletter.
